The YMS Boys Choir
(formerly known as The Canberra Boys Choir)
About the Choir
The YMS Boys Choir provides musical training through learning fun songs and musical games. Any boy enrolled in Primary School is welcome to join, and no experience is required.
The choir is a supportive environment with an emphasis on developing a love for singing and gaining confidence through performance.
Topics that have been previously covered by the Choir include: Songs written by the Beatles, Queen, The Wizard of Oz, music from Papua New Guinea, and songs about Superheroes.
The rehearsals start at 4:15pm where there the boys engage in some vocal warm ups, including the development of aural skills through learning sol-fa (i.e. do re mi fa so la ti do with hand signals) and performing some vocal games.
They then rehearse a series of different songs each term (mostly by rote, although occasionally using basic written notation).
There is then a 15 minute break where they have Afternoon Tea in the courtyard (provided by a different parent each week), before they return to the Hall to play some musical games (developing a range of aural and musical skills) and continue performing different songs.
The boys are often encouraged to engage in basic vocal improvisation, and adapt songs with their own words.
The choir is led by tutor Michael Sollis, who is a composer and accompanies the choir on Guitar and piano. The choir engage in several community performances throughout the year at fetes and other community events.
